September 26 is a Special Day

Because it is Johnny Appleseed's birthday!  And let's admit it, in the lower grades, you can't just skip over his birthday.  It would be a major, unforgivable sin.

This year was Mrs. Kussee's class 2nd annual Johnny Appleseed celebration.

My Grandma knows everything there is to know about apples.  She has an apple tree in her backyard and every year, she dries apples in large dehydrators in her backyard.  Everyone likes her dried apples.

Everyone.

So it's only natural to have her come in to my classroom and teach about apples!  She's created a whole presentation about apples.  She talks about the types of apples, what apple is the sweetest or the most tart, and what you can make with apples.

The kids just eat her up.  She even recited a little poem about Johnny Appleseed this year.

Meet the world's best grandmother.

She's got some of the greatest faces when she's explaining things.

I warned my kids that if they did anything to disrespect my grandma, they'd be out of my classroom and in the principal's office so fast.  Let's just say they were perfect little monsters (in every good way).

Not that they're ever naughty.

Some of the yummy apples Grandma brought in for us to try.

After her presentation, she lets each of the kids come up and core and spiral slice their own apple.  They LOVE this part.  Most of them have never seen or eaten an apple like this.  They said it made the apple taste that much better.

My mom and the Toad came in to lend a hand too.

My mom made apple crisp, apple muffins, apple cookies, and apple sauce for the kids to try.
She also brought apple juice for them to try too.

After they took a bite out of each item, they had to rate it and draw a happy face or sad face.  Most of them said that they hated dried apples, but after trying my grandma's, dried apples became their favorite!

And of course, what would Johnny Appleseed's birthday be without watching the video about him?  I was surprised at how many of my students hadn't seen it before.  I was happy to introduce them to a classic.

It was such a fantastic day and I love how happy it makes my grandma!
